Fall session in Pacific Northwest

Fall, for most of us, means getting our yearly family photos taken because the busyness of summer is gone and we are getting back into a routine. The leaves start turning, and the sunset is much earlier than in summer. Time to cozy up in fall sweaters and breathe in the fresh breeze.

When to book a fall family session in Pacific Northwest?

The best time to book your fall family session is at the end of summer. Early bookers get lots of date options, while last-minute bookers will have fewer choices. Please remember that weekends get booked out first!

What month is best for fall family photos in PNW?

Fall arrives early to the PNW, doesn’t it?! In my opinion, September and October are the best months for your family session. The temperature in September might still be the same as in August over here, LOL, and we get many sunny evenings for sun-filled golden-hour photos! The sun sets earlier as the days go by, which is easier for little ones!

Leaves start turning their color towards the end of September and through mid-October. But thanks to our PNW firs, we never end up with bare trees, so you can book your family session all the way into the end of November! Gloomy, misty sessions are also the beautiful vibe we get over here.

What to wear for a fall family session in Washington?

Where to even start! Who doesn’t love fall clothes?! Earth tones, sweaters, beanies, boots, long dresses, or denim. You can get so creative during a session! Head over to Pinterest and check out some fall color palettes first.

Best colors for your fall session clothing are creamy, brown, beige, off-white, burgundy, and olive green or mustard. Make sure your color palette isn’t too dark! We don’t want you to blend in with the deep, dark fir trees in the background!

Start with mom always! From there, pick clothes for the children and neutrals for dad! Stick with one pattern, either for your outfit or for one of your children. Don’t forget layers. It can get cold in the evenings. Stockings, undershirts, or cute sweaters work great! Neutral brown shoes and boots work the best!

Comfort is very important for a fall session. If children are cold and miserable, it will show! My sessions are very playful, so I can assure you that we will all warm up as well as we are moving around!

Accessories: If you have a color-matching beanie or a hat, feel free to add it! Avoid scarves and turtlenecks!

A kite can also be a great add-on to your session, and we can add playtime at the end!

Which is the best location for a family photo shoot in PNW?

One of my favorite fall locations for family photo shoot are Northernstate Park in Sedro-Wooley - for end of September, Fort Casey State Park or downtown Coupeville. If you want truly epic mountain photos that Mt. Baker and Artist point is a great option for fall photos in September!

What if it rains on the day of my scheduled session day?

This is Washington, right? And we are used to lots of drizzle in fall and winter. The good thing is, it almost never rains all day! Please stay flexible on the day of your session so we can shift the time of your shoot in case of rain.

If the rain is too bad all day long, we will reschedule to the next convenient day for all parties. Easy-peasy.
