Everything you need to know for a Mt. Baker family session

Where is Mt Baker and Artist point.

Have you visited the breathtaking Mt. Baker area in Washington yet? You might know it as a popular skiing destination, but the short summer is when the magic really begins. The moment you arrive, it feels like nature wraps you in a giant hug. The air is fresh, the views are wide open, and the peaceful quiet is something you didn’t know you needed.

Wandering the trails and taking in the viewpoints around Mt. Baker is unforgettable. It’s the kind of place that fills your heart and leaves you in awe.

Picture Lake and Artist Point are two must-see spots in this area. They're about a 2-hour drive from Anacortes or Whidbey Island, tucked into the stunning Cascade Mountains. If you’re coming from Mount Vernon or Burlington, you’ll get there in about 90 minutes.

Who is this session for.

This spot is for families who want more than just photos—they want an experience. If you're dreaming of exploring the mountains, soaking in epic views, and coming home with stunning images, Mt. Baker is your place.

This isn’t a quick, posed session. You’ll feel the fresh mountain air, hear the crunch of trail beneath your feet, and be surrounded by nature as part of your story. It’s perfect for easy-going families whose kids don’t mind a bit of a drive and love a little adventure. No excessive hiking is necessary, each session is tailored the family needs and kids’ ages.

If you're a couple planning an engagement session, an elopement, or just want to celebrate this season of life together—this location can be yours as well! Seniors looking for something different? You’ll love it here.

When can you have your photos taken at Mt. Baker?

The window for mountain sessions at Mt. Baker and Artist Point is short—but so worth it. The road to Artist Point usually opens just after the 4th July and closes again in October, depending on the snow. That means sessions are only possible for a few months each year.

My sessions begin about 2 hours before sunset to catch the soft, golden light that makes those views even more stunning. I also keep a close eye on the weather, since conditions in the mountains can shift quickly and we want to make sure it's safe and beautiful for your session.

The best months for photos in this area are August and September. The skies are usually clear, the trails are open, and as fall approaches, the colors start to change. A crisp fall evening in the mountains, surrounded by golden light and rich colors—there’s nothing quite like it.

What to expect at your Mt Baker Washington photo shoot?

  • You can expect to be surrounded by lots of beauty—but a little preparation goes a long way.

  • Bring an extra outfit, especially for the little ones. That’s always a good idea, but especially helpful after a long drive. Accidents happen, even during sessions.

  • Pack pajamas for the ride home, along with dinner or snacks for the car. One local favorite is North Fork Brewery, where you can grab some really yummy pizza either before or after your session.

  • Expect a bit of driving between photo spots and some walking, too. But don’t worry—I plan each route with your family in mind, making sure it’s manageable and enjoyable for everyone.

  • It will likely be cooler up there, even in summer. You might even spot some or a lot of leftover snow! Pack extra, photogenic layers for everyone to stay warm and cozy without sacrificing style.

  • Artist Point is a popular destination, but most visitors leave before sunset. We’ll do our best to time things just right so your photos feel peaceful and uninterrupted.
