What to wear for a Fall family session

Fall, the season of pumpkin lattes is around the corner! You might be as excited as me to burry the Summer shorts and faded bikini and cosy up to some fleece, cotton and sweaters!

Did you book a fall family session but not sure how to properly style your family? Here are a few tips and rules. In this article you will also find links where to shop your fall photo shoot outfits right now!

5 things to know before you go shopping:

  1. Avoid matchy-matchy. This is not the style any more. Do not dress to same colors or styles. Rather than match, coordinate and compliment each other. Mix fabrics and add layers.

  2. Avoid too many patterns. Fall is about different patterns. I get it. I love adding ONE. It can be mom’s floral dress, dad’s button up shirt, or one kid’s outfit with a subtle pattern. It breaks the solid colors and looks great when everyone together.

  3. Be comfortable and the best version of YOURSELVES. I do not offer client’s closet and probably never will. I want my clients to be themselves, in their own clothes that makes them feel beautiful.

  4. Shoes. This is a bit tricky because for fall photos we aren’t (usually:) on the beach where you don’t need shoes. Choose neutral color, fall, leather shoes, boots or ankle high shoes, simple ballerinas, comfy platform heals for mom or brown dress shoes for dad. Avoid sports shoes, sneakers, bright colors and logos.

  5. Weather appropriate. In Virginia we are lucky with the weather. Fall can be pretty warm. If the weather is amazing and warm, wear summer dress in fall colors! In case of cold front, don’t forget to add some layers. You or your kiddos don’t want to be uncomfortable on the shoot.

Pick a color palette! Browse your Pinterest for fall color schemes. These can be super helpful when deciding which direction you want to go this year with your fall photos. Creamy and subtle, or bright or warm colors?

Where to shop dresses for mom right now:

Altar’d State for short dresses for a warm day

Baltic Born for maxi dresses, sweaters and layers

Golden Hour Boutique for local shopping in Virginia Beach

How do you dress your kiddos?

Don’t forget that they have to love their outfits (or you have to be very good at bribing). I don’t know about you but I have to always pick outfit together with my 4 year old. She has to approve 100%. Make sure kids won’t be too cold or too hot. You never know around here, you need to have both version ready or some extra layers that you can always add or take away.

My favorite’s stores for kiddos are:

Carter’s

Old Navy

Gymboree

FINAL TIPS:

Fall calls for sweater dresses, flannel jackets for dads or sons, hats are an amazing add on! Limit pattern to one person in the group.

You might pick a gloomy grey overcast day or super bright sunny day and that’s ok! Any weather is fine for beautiful family photos as long as you are having fun. Make sure your clothes is comfortable and you are able to move around, chase your kiddos and throw some leaves in the air.
